Van Duyn Elementary – Indoor simulation aspects with outdoor planting

Van Duyn Elementary School

Due to constraints on land in city schools, Van Duyn Elementary, led by Thien An Huynh and Principal Ms. Eva Williams along with the great team of 3rd grade teachers and their students prepared their sustainable agriculture test plots in large SUV tires just outside the playground area. 

Test plots 1, 2, and 3 were set up and bush beans test crop was planted when spring arrived and the robins nested in Syracuse, NY. The first crop showed that tires outdoors (Hybrid plots) can work well for our international experiment, capturing erosion data as well our indoor test pots, but with rainfall data like our schools’ planting in outdoor fields.
